For the last 2 years my peonies have only bloomed on one side of the plant. Does anyone have ideas?

My peonies are the pink type, but every year the colour seems to get lighter and lighter. This year they are almost white. What can I do to get the colour back.

Peonies self-seed. It's mid June and someone gave me some peonies plants with tubers attached. The plant portion the leaves are drying out and appear to be dying.

What should I do so that I can preserve the tuber to plant in the fall? It seems like my peonies send up their shoots in the spring from eyes?

How does that work? I'm in this house ten years, each spring the big peony produces only one bud, what does it need to provide more blooms?

I moved my peonies to a new house in September in zone 7. The soil is partly clay. They did well and bounced back quickly and put on lots of buds.

Unfortunately, most of the buds didn't open. Did I plant too deeply? Should I try to lift them a little? Almost every spring we have a sudden late frost which kills the peony blooms.

I have learned to cover them if I know it is coming. But it is heart breaking to see all those buds ready to open and then brown and dead after the unexpected temperature drop.

This is the 4th spring I have had my peony. The only time it has bloomed was last year and then with only two blossoms.

Every spring the bush is loaded with buds but they just stop maturing and seem to die. In April of this year we did have below freezing temps for three nights and two dustings of snow; so, I figured the buds froze.

Nevertheless, a couple of my neighbors have peonies in full bloom and they were subjected to the same freezing temps but they seem to be unaffected.

Why are the buds on my bush not maturing? I live in the Bay Area, CA zone 9. I planted about peonies bush plants a few years ago. They have done well -- this spring I have the most blooms yet.

So even though they require a chill, zone 9 may just be chilly enough. Wondered if you debud the extra smaller buds if the major bud will get more food, therefore a larger flower?

Ohio plant! Skip to main content. By Catherine Boeckmann. Plant peonies in the fall: in late September and October in most of the U.

Grow peonies in deep, fertile, humus-rich, moist soil that drains well. Dig a generous-sized hole, about 2 feet deep and 2 feet across in well-drained soil in a sunny spot.

The soil will benefit from the addition of organic material in the planting hole. If the soil is heavy or very sandy, enrich it with extra compost.

Incorporate about one cup of bonemeal into the soil. Learn more about soil amendments and preparing soil for planting. Set the root so the eyes face upward on top of a mound of soil in the hole, placing the roots just 2 inches below the soil surface.

If it's April, and you're preparing for a move this month, weigh the possibility of plant damage or death against your desire to take the plant with you.

Severely stressed plants may not bloom again for several years and may be vulnerable to attack by fungal diseases or insect pests. Peonies need full sun to get the energy to create those massive blooms.

Because peonies only bloom once a year, it's disappointing to get only a few blooms straining toward the sun.

Choose a site that gets at least six hours of full sun each day. The north side of your home will not provide this. If you are using peonies as a foundation plant, the east or south side of your home will have the strongest light.

Don't skimp on the rootball you will need to dig up when transplanting a peony. A peony's health begins with the health of the rootstock, so you will want to preserve as much as you can while minimizing any damage that might provide a pathway for insects or diseases.

Measure at least 18 inches from the crown when you start digging. Dig straight down, and pause to pry around the rootball until you feel the entire plant begin to lift.

Do not lift the plant by the stems; breakage will ensue. If the rootball is too heavy to lift from its hole, gently wash away some of the soil from the roots.

Peonies need soil with good drainage. Neither sticky clay nor sandy gravel will yield a healthy peony, but the cure for both situations is the same: amending the soil with compost.

You don't want to create a planting hole that's so enriched and fluffy that the roots never want to extend beyond it; rather, you must give your transplanted peony a booster to alleviate shock while also encouraging adaptation to the new home.
